in the above first report image, you see black arrows and text pointing out what very clearly appears to be a dark tower of some kind with a bright light reflective top and casting a dark shadow on the ground just to the right and back of it. note how the shadow length and width very closely approximates the tower size and radiates out from the tower base. now please understand that this evidence is in a wide-angle image mgs moc m08-06809 strip rather than the usual narrow-angle strip. further, it has been flipped vertically by me here to provide a more comfortable view but this does not distort the evidence.

a wide versus narrow strip knowledge is important because narrow-angle strips offer a closer view while the wide-angle strips offer only a distant generally poorer resolution regional view. that means that objects in wide-angle strips to be seen at all must be really large and massive. that means that this tower appearing object would of course have to be very massive to be seen this well. on the other hand, it also means that closer examination of this object in this kind of poorer resolution wide-angle imaging is just not going to happen with any reasonable success of providing more detail.

saturn does the wave in upper atmosphere

two decades of scrutinizing saturn are finally paying off, as scientists have discovered a wave pattern, or oscillation, in saturn's atmosphere only visible from earth every 15 years.

the discovery of the wave pattern is the result of a 22-year campaign observing saturn from earth (the longest study of temperature outside earth ever recorded), and the cassini spacecraft's observations of temperature changes in the giant planet's atmosphere over time.

the cassini infrared results, which appear in the same issue of nature as the data from the 22- year ground-based observing campaign, indicate that saturn's wave pattern is similar to a pattern found in earth's upper atmosphere. the earthly oscillation takes about two years. a similar pattern on jupiter takes more than four earth years. the new saturn findings add a common link to the three planets.

just as scientists have been studying climate changes in earth's atmosphere for long periods of time, nasa scientists have been studying changes in saturn's atmosphere. glenn orton of nasa's jet propulsion laboratory in pasadena, calif., says patience is the key to studying changes over the course of a saturnian year, the equivalent of about 30 earth years.

"you could only make this discovery by observing saturn over a long period of time," said orton, lead author of the ground-based study. "it's like putting together 22 years worth of puzzle pieces, collected by a hugely rewarding collaboration of students and scientists from around the world on various telescopes."

the mars cydonia "face" object your see above and its controversy has been very well known all over the world for quite a few years now and has a lot of followers. reputations have been forged on it, websites created on its foundations, books written, and money made on it. why? because of the obvious that it is interesting and visually suggestive evidence. some of you have noted that, in the time since the inception of this work in year 2000, this subject has been conspicuously absent from this website's evidence reporting.

i'm often asked why? in fact, in email i'm asked why so much that it is becoming a burden on my now increasingly very limited time to answer and try to explain myself in this regard over and over again. to those that have asked, i usually cryptically advise that it has been explored to death by others and, in my opinion, the "face" evidence was a trap for the unwary laid by the secrecy agenda who floated it into public awareness intentionally. i also indicated that i did not want to step on the toes of others who have spent so much time exploring this evidence. after all, the cydonia "face" is their thing, not mine.

however, i did not go on to explain myself in detail because that would have opened up more doors and questions. so i suspect my responses were less than satisfactory to many of those who asked. but, now that i am running out of room time wise to deal with this over and over again in email, i've come to the decision that i need to put in my two cents on this and better answer those that have asked. however, the question is can i add anything new of substance to this issue that has been examined by so many? you be the judge.

curved features on jupiter’s moon europa may indicate that its poles have wandered by almost 90°, a new study reports. researchers believe the drastic shift in europa’s rotational axis was likely a result of the build-up of thick ice at the poles. “a spinning body is most stable with its mass farthest from its spin axis,” says isamu matsuyama of the carnegie institution’s department of terrestrial magnetism. “on europa, variations in the thickness of its outer shell caused a mass imbalance, so the rotation axis reoriented to a new stable state.” an extreme shift like this also suggests the existence of an internal liquid ocean beneath the icy crust.

the research team used images from the voyager, galileo, and new horizons spacecraft to map several large arc-shaped depressions that extend more than 500 kilometers across europa’s surface. with a radius of about 1500 kilometers, europa is slightly smaller than the earth’s moon.

by comparing the pattern of the depressions with fractures that would result from stresses caused by a shift in europa’s rotational axis, the researchers determined that the axis had shifted by approximately 80°. the previous axis of rotation is now located about 10° from the present equator.

such a change is called “true polar wander” as opposed to apparent polar wander caused by plate tectonics. there is evidence for true polar wander on earth, and also on mars and on saturn’s moon enceladus. “our study adds europa to this list,” says matsuyama. “it suggests that planetary bodies might be more prone to reorientation than we thought.”

the study also has implications for liquid water inside europa. many scientists believe europa has an extensive subsurface ocean based on spacecraft photos showing a fractured, icy surface. the ocean beneath the crust would be kept liquid by heat generated by tidal forces from jupiter’s gravity. the presence of heat and water may make life possible, even though the subsurface ocean is cut off from solar energy.

“the large reorientation on europa required to explain the circular depressions implies that its outer ice shell is decoupled from the core by a liquid layer,” says matsuyama. “therefore, our study provides an independent test for the presence of an interior liquid layer.”

venus express has detected the molecule hydroxyl on another planet for the first time, this detection gives scientists an important new tool to unlock the workings of venus’s dense atmosphere.

hydroxyl, an important but difficult-to-detect molecule, is made up of a hydrogen and oxygen atom each. it has been found in the upper reaches of the venusian atmosphere, some 100 km above the surface, by venus express’s visible and infrared thermal imaging spectrometer, virtis.

a third giant red storm has flared up on jupiter, joining the great red spot and the recently developed red spot junior. the spot, along with new measurements of record-high wind speeds on red spot junior, suggest the solar system's largest planet is experiencing a time of global upheaval.

jupiter's great red spot is an ancient, hurricane-like storm that may have been raging for 340 years or more, based on early observations with telescopes. at three times the width of earth, it is the largest storm in the solar system.

it was recently joined by a similar, but smaller storm called red spot junior. red spot junior grew out of the merger of three smaller, white storms between 1998 and 2000 and turned red in 2006. it is about the size of earth.

now, a third red spot, about half the size of red spot junior, has broken out on the giant gaseous planet. the spot, previously a white storm, now appears red in hubble space telescope images taken on 9 and 10 may. the observations were led by imke de pater of the university of california, berkeley, us.

no one knows for sure what gives the three spots their red colour. but one theory is that especially violent storms dredge up material from deeper in jupiter's atmosphere, such as phosphorus-containing molecules, which undergo chemical reactions that turn them red when exposed to sunlight.

venus express has revealed a planet of extraordinarily changeable and extremely large-scale weather. bright hazes appear in a matter of days, reaching from the south pole to the low southern latitudes and disappearing just as quickly. such ‘global weather’, unlike anything on earth, has given scientists a new mystery to solve.

venus's double vortex raises new mystery

a bizarre double vortex whirls in the atmosphere above venus's south pole, images from europe's venus express spacecraft reveal. but it is not clear what causes the "double eye" pattern.

previous missions to venus have spotted a similar structure over its north pole and glimpsed stormy atmospheric behaviour at the south pole. but the double vortex has never before been seen at the south pole.

the feature was not even clear in the first image released by the venus express team in april, just after the spacecraft entered into orbit around the planet (see first images of venus’s south pole revealed). but images taken over the course of about a week during that first orbit do reveal two vortices above the south pole. the vortices are formed by winds of super-hurricane force.

the winds on venus spin westwards at hundreds of kilometres per hour, taking only four days to rotate around the planet, which is slightly smaller than the earth. this "super-rotation", combined with the natural recycling of hot air in the atmosphere, would logically induce a vortex over each pole. but the mystery is why there are two vortices.
