the fifth sun on the aztec calendar
within the legend of the aztec peoples there exists the idea of four worlds. it is said that four worlds had risen and been destroyed earlier, and that at the time of the spanish conquest, the world had just entered into the fifth sun. the concept of “sun” appears to have been an expression for a cosmic age. as given with many aspects of oral history, the interpretations about the four worlds, or the four suns, vary according to who is doing the telling, or who is doing the listening.
one of the most outstanding examples of the legend of the four worlds can be found inscribed on the aztec calendar or sunstone, known in spanish, as la piedra del sol. the interpretation of the aztec sunstone, however, is open to discussion, as a break existed between the peoples who created that sculpture, and their descendants. especially after the conquest of the americas by spain during most of the sixteenth century and later into the nineteenth century, the social knowledge of the peoples of the americas was lost in many respects. to what degree the ancient knowledge had been lost even before the spanish conquest can only be surmised, as even less documentation exists in this regard. however, by some accounts, pyramidal sites like teotihuacan and palenque had been long abandoned before the coming of the spaniards to the americas.
Sun, Earth, Serpents, Trees, Dragons, and Birds oh my!
i think what one of my wise friends said to me on another online group is befitting of the pakal photo as well as the aztec 5th sun mentioned. let me tie them together for you as well as dissect it here a bit.
in the pakal photo first we see the bird or the feathered serpent above. then we see the cross/serpent/4 earth directions. and the eyes are gazing upward as if towards the sun. pakal is in a relaxed state…his eyes are wide open. we also see what looks like a tree. he looks like he is about to take off, to go somewhere. well he is for sure! hmmm i wonder why the sun features so prominently here as well as in the article about the 5th sun.
my wise friend said:
“birds, doves, feathers, vultures and ibises (egyptian), eagles, etc. are always symbols of the descending 'enlivening 'spiritual' energetic force of influence, (from the heavens) or the growth of the spirit within.”
“plants, trees, tree of life, branches always speak of, or allegorically indicate the networks of the nervous system or circulatory system in the body.”
“snakes, serpents, dragons (breathing fire), always indicate the influence and/or energy rising from the physical (earth's electro-magnetic energy).”
“last week i was just discussing a large carved wood statue of the chinese goddess, quan yin, with a chinese friend of mine in a relics shop. above her head was an eagle with wings unfurled landing on her shoulder, below her feet was a flame breathing dragon. i asked him if he knew what the symbology meant: he didn't have a clue. so i explained to him that the eagle meant the descending holy heavenly spirit, and the dragon (at her feet) indicated that she had become a
goddess when she had subdued the strong forces of the physical in favor of the heaven sent cosmic energy…”
“whenever, the eagle, dove or bird is over, and a serpent of dragon is below an individual, this is indication of 'human perfection,' a perfect blend of physical and spiritual. this is the personification of the "feathered serpent," as indicated in the symbology of krishna (hindi), buddha (buddhist), jesus (christian), lord pascal (mayan), tutankhamen (egyptian), quan yin (east asian, she was originally male until the 12th century).”
the `feathered serpent' is symbolism to indicate an individual who has attained the `perfected balance' of the earth energies and the sun's (heavenly) energies.”
i think my wise friend had it right!
i am working on attaining my “feathers” (got my work cut out for me for sure) via the practice described above in the pakal photo…sungazing… as well as several other modalities such as contemplation, smiling, laughter, singing, dancing to the latest nelly fertado cd (love that cd!), breath work, and various forms of exercise, and reading this forum.
i do not think that “all of the knowledge of the peoples of the americas” was lost at all. i just think that we have been so blind that we have not seen quite literally what is given to us in each and every day from dawn to dusk…but the knowledge is there if we choose to do something with it and make the intention of learning more.
sungazing - that's wild. i try to do a little bit every time the sun's out by first generating an enormous feeling of gratitude before facing it followed by many thank you's - a sense of connection there. oh, i have a sungazing story. i was in a rock shop looking at turquoise strands and a tibetan woman approached me, grabbed my hand and immediately started ressonating as our gazes were locked. after minutes of this her face became a pschedelic flow of rainbow colors, as if i was seeing the remarkable aura of a master. in reply to this i strove to generate green heart rays that surrounded us and through this - i broke a sweat. after a long time of ressonating together she gave me a cup of water. she told me she had gazed at the sun all day, and i thought it was remarkable. she told me she studied with ammachi for ten years. i gave her a treasured green heartstone (chrysoprase), and walked away after a bit. weeks later i'd return to the store and discover she left her cup for me...what a beautiful experience that was, a sweet memory. they say masters can enter your life for a moment - that was a lucky moment for me.
