i am steadily working my way through the unedited ra session transcripts, and am currently at session 91. as i go along i am getting a very clear sense of the importance of understanding the major arcana of the tarot deck. but ra's perspective is quite different from traditional tarot studies, and i am hoping we can establish an ongoing discussion of that perspective.
there is much ground to cover, and i hope we can help each other along. however, if you are one of those people who think you are so advanced and enlightened that you don't need to study the law of one in detail, i would ask that you kindly butt out of this discussion. it takes a lot of self discipline and patience to understand ra, and we don't need to have the added burden of smarty pants comments from those who are not willing to do the work. (there are plenty of other places for such discussions in the dc fora.) this is about ra's perspective on tarot, not yours, nor mine, nor madame zelda's. please base your comments on law of one and your insights into it.
the preceding paragraph might seem a bit heavy handed, but there has been a problem with this in the law of one fora in the past, and if you have spent much time here, you know what i mean.
i will start off with a discussion to raise some initial questions.
ra describes tarot as an instance of the "system of sevens" used by numerous logoi in the development of their creations. the system of sevens consists of 3 sets of 7 archetypes plus a final archetype, which is the choice, or the fool. the 3 categories are :
- mind
- body
- spirit
each category contains 7 elements:
- matrix
- potentiator
- catalyst
- experience
- significator
- transformation
- great way
so when you put it all together, here is how the tarot looks, ordered according to the scheme ra says was the original sequence:
- mind
- matrix (magician)
- potentiator (high priestess)
- catalyst (empress)
- experience (emperor)
- significator (hierophant)
- transformation (lovers, or two paths)
- great way (chariot)
- body
- matrix (justice or balance)
- potentiator (wisdom or the sage)
- catalyst (wheel of fortune)
- experience (enchantress)
- significator (hanged man or martyr)
- transformation (death)
- great way (alchemist)
- spirit
- matrix (devil)
- potentiator (lightning struck tower)
- catalyst (star or hope)
- experience (moon)
- significator (sun)
- transformation (judgement)
- great way (the world)
- the choice (fool)
ra clearly states that the purpose of the tarot is not divination, but rather self contemplation and introspection. the imagery of the original tarot as given to the egyptians was not to be taken as a final word, but rather as a starting point for the journey. the 3rd density venutians who became ra developed and used this contemplative study of the 3x7 system of archetypes for their own evolution, but did so by visualization of the concepts and imagery, not formalizing the system into a deck of cards with fixed and standardized imagery or interpretations. the tarot deck as we know it, was an outgrowth of the introduction of the 3x7 system by ra to the egyptians, and represents our 3rd density inclination to formalize and standardize. (the minor arcana were introduced later, along with the divinatory practices, and are of no concern to us here.)
i tend to get a little lost in the terminology of the 3x7 system, and it seems that getting a good, clear understanding of what the terms mean would be a good starting point. what, exactly is a matrix in this context? what do the matrices of mind, body and spirit have in common? how do they differ? how do they differ from potentiators? or from catalysts, or significators?
from my readings so far, it seems that the real purpose, and greatest value of the tarot is for one to contemplate each of the archetypes individually, developing an individualized imagery and comprehension of what they mean. ra was unwilling to spell it out in too much detail, because that would short-circuit the exploration. i too believe that our goal here is not to button down all the details of the meaning of the archetypes but rather to sort out a basic conceptual foundation upon which we can build our individual enlightenment. for me, a better understanding of this terminology would be a great start on that foundation.
ultimately, according to ra, it would be useful for each of us to express tarot in our own imagery based on our own cultural and imaginative perspectives. but this first requires that we establish an understanding of the 3x7 framework upon which our logos constructed our existence. that is where i hope this discussion can go.
