><font face="BakerSignet" size="4">All of this to say...I went out with my sister for her 21st birthday...i guess it has been a long time since I went out with people whom I haven't known for a long time...but there were just two people there that I just watched amazed...I knew they were both hurting so bad in different ways...one leading towards destruction of others...and one destruction of self...</font>

><font face="BakerSignet" size="4">this just reminded me of what Ra says and it is not isolated to Ra...it is also something that I have heard from many "missionaries" (be it their mission to convert you to their way of thinking...not isolated to Christianity, religion at all...could be even their view on politics) what is heard is that you don't spend a lot of time on the middle of the roaders...but the ones that are on the edge...the ones at either end of the polarity spectrum of the "thoughts" that you are trying to convey...</font>

><font face="BakerSignet" size="4">Also..Saw Lord of the Rings...I thought it was wonderful...I remember reading the book a few weeks ago and thinking how interesting that even at the very beginning it is Bilbo's birthday (111) and Frodo's birthday (33) and all through out there are numerical items such as this...Also I was watching the movie and something jumped out and I thought I have to write that to the group because it is exactly what we were talking about...and then I got engrossed and forgot...so be it...just wondering if anyone else thought of something while seeing it or has any thoughts on the movie as well...</font>

I concur - this movie is probably one of the best
movies ever made, I think, and I don't say that
lightly, or as a Tolkien fan. I will put it easily in
the top 20 of all time, and possibly higher. So go
see it! :-)

I am glad everyone else liked it as well..

my husband has not read Tolkien has no desire too and is not a fan...but he
walked away and said that was one of the best movies he had ever seen....

I read the book just the week before so I was a little more "thrown" and had
to refocus when they had to jump twenty chapters in the beginning....and
some thing were a little "off" but then some were word for word and my
sister and I breathed in a gasp...as well as I heard many people in the
audience when the gave close ups on the Shire and Bilbo's birthday and Bag's
End (his home) we both had exactly seen the same thing in our minds...but
never taked about it! that is what hapenned the entire movie...

trolls and elves outside the theater and it was sold out. Im going
back this weekend dresed as Darth Vader to kick some ass, and sneek
in the back!

Its sources are things long before in mind, or in some cases already written, and little or nothing in it was modified by the war that began in 1939 or its sequels. The real war does not resemble the legendary war in its process or its conclusion. If it had inspired or directed the development of the legend, then certainly the Ring would have been seized and used against Sauron; he would not have been annihilated but enslaved, and Barad-dur would not have been destroyed but occupied. (he uses other analogies here)...But I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence. I much prefer history, true or feigned, with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers. I think that many confuse 'applicability' and 'allegory' but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purpossed domination of the author. An author cannot of course remain wholly unaffected by his experience, but the ways in which a story-germ uses the soil of experience are extrememly complex, and attmepts to define the process are at best guesses from evidence that is inadequate and ambiguous. It is also false, though naturally attractive, when the lives of the author and critic have overlapped, to suppose that the movements of thought or the events of times common to both were necessarily the most powerful influences.....It has been supposed by some that the "Scouring of the Shire" reflects the situation in England at the time when I was finishing my tale. It does not. It is an essential part of the plot, foreseen from the outset, without need I say, any allegorical significance or contemporary politcal reference whatsoever." and he goes on for alittle while before talking about hobbits and that sort...but this gives the basic picture...and I though that was part of the stories appeal...that it was not allegorical...I too do not care for allegories...</font></font>
