in california there seem many "ghost towns" that are less than 200 years old. there's probably many towns in the world right now that are decomposing, a sort of decay into slums and then desertion; and there's probably some sociological explanation to how a town decays. it may be that such modern understanding has some relevance to the lost cities of thousands of years ago, as if history repeats in some way.

if the oil drys up in the middle east, it would seem as if those civilizations may be economically impacted in an adverse way. so many towns seem to run on oil and gas that it seems difficult to imagine that drying up.

in california the traffic fines are increasing. i interpret this as a move to discourage driving - to get cars off the road and make driving a priveledge for the few who can afford it. it may be that moves like this foreshadow some anticipation of changes to come, though difficult to say.

was recently at bodi, near mono lake, it was much larger that i thought it would be.
