there is a program already that does this...(if all you want
to do is construct 3d animation of platonic solids...

i have it on my computer here at work, it's called "poly",
made by "pedagoguery software"

http://www.peda.com

there's a downloadable shareware version, and it has all
of the platonic solids (and tons of other 3d solids)
already built. you can move them around, stretch them,
stack them on each other, etc.

dont know if this is what you guys were looking for,
but i hope it helps...
