i would like to again remind everyone that this discussion group should
seriously consider moving to a "discussion messageboard forum" rather
than use an email listserv.
the forum approach allows for much greater organization of discussions,
allows you to track the discussions you care to follow (with email
reminders when there is a new post), include links to images, allows
for multiple moderators (per topic area) if desired and many other
welcome attributes. it also moves closer to standardization of
information presentation (e.g. not having to edit your replies and
remove dead text etc.)
personally, i get tired of trying to sort out what people have written,
what is reply and what is junk text. i hardly read most of the posts
anymore.
one last thing, the board retains all the discussion that have gone on
so that as new members join, they don't ask or bring up a topic that
has been discussed 20 times already, they can simply review what has
already been discussed and add something in the appropriate place.
here is a link to the message board i have set up...

moderator(s)... please please consider this seriously.
i will gladly help you administer the forum as needed.
ok, off the soap box now. :?)

hello every one,
as this is my first time posting to the list i have to say thank you
to everyone for the wonderful discussion and ideas. they have helped
me take a different and ever changing look at the path i walk.
now onto this topic. for the past month i have been using gmail or
google mail. and i think that just using this mail service would
negate the whole discussion message board vs. e-mail problem. gmail
gives you 1 gig of memory and it lets you categorize and store e-mail.
also giving you an inter e-mail search engine so you can run searches
on past topics people etc. anything contained in the mail. as well as
storing the email's by subject line. so that all mail coming in under
the same subject is put together in a drop down list.
i have found that using this service has made it far easier to archive
and keep track of current discussions.
gmail is by invite only at this time and is a free service. if anyone
would like an invitation just e-mail me and i'll send it in.
in love and light

i love forums and agree that they are much easier to work with. i
don't get the emails from this group - i have it set to no emails
and i just check the yahoo site - but i agree that a forum would
make it easier to search for topics. it is extremely difficult to
search on the yahoo group cuz it only searches part of the archive
at a time.
my son uses gmail and loves it! it combines the forum idea in that
it organizes posts by thread. but, that would require everyone to
switch to gmail, which is not feasible. we cannot expect new members
to switch their gmail. and, right now gmail is in test mode, but
later it might cost $$ ? maybe ?
so overall i think the forum idea is the best. my son has set up
forums and they work really well.

what i would love to see is a combination of something like
your system plus an email listserv program. in either case, one wants
to get away from yahoo and their ads and control. an email listserv
program (other than yahoo) can do a very good job of delivering simple
text or html email messages to those who prefer that to the option of
wading through a website and picking and choosing stuff to read. the
latter has the disadvantage of being slower with all the graphics,
etc. i think there will always be people who prefer one or the other
of email messages or website wading.

the bulletin board system allows you to "track" the topics you are
interested in (almost exactly as you describe). when someone posts to
a topic you are "tracking", the system sends you an email to let you
know so you don't have to check in constantly to see if anyone has
replied. it is the best of both worlds in my opinion.
yes it is true that some will prefer an email listserv to a bulletin
board forum, but i've only met one person who's tried both and didn't
prefer the latter.

well, with all due respect for your work, it would be nice if
people's postings would tidily fit into the categories of subject
matter you have. many posts and threads will be well served by that
system. many will not because of overlapping multiple categories or
just being outside the mold, probably more than you think. what do you
do with those posts?
what i'd like is to also have classic listserv options so you can
receive, or view, messages sorted by time either individually or in
digest mode. you could even allow the option of this sorting to go
down to the level of your dozen or so topic categories.

ed and will,
i have often found that most message boards are best served by having a
"general" catagory without breakdowns into seperate subjects, primarily
on sites where there is only one "main" subject, this one being
loo/david's work. the multi subjects are great on huge boards where
subjects are broad and distances from each other but on more narrow
subjects what i have noticed happening is that posters simply start
dumping all their posts into one subject and the rest are ignored. i
don't blame them, its easier having all the threads in one place instead
of having to click on another subject. course, you do want sections for
static type stuff like the purpose/introduce your
self/links/events/questions, etc, its the granularity of discussions
(ascension, sacred geometry, etc) that i am talking about.
you are a programmer like myself right will? i checked out your site,
nice flash btw. perhaps you could hack the phpbb and add in a field for
each member to receive an actual email containing the post content which
is sent on a post, that way best of both worlds for those wanting to use
gmail/their email client instead of clicking a link to hit the forum.
i'd help but i am a microsoft junkie and have no experience with php :/.
but, if the members ever want to actually perform the move and its
decided that the current forum's messages need to be preserved, i can
help with the scraper writing for offloading into a db for you to load
into the new one (if it even needs to even be done, admin might have the
power to offload it into something else, i dunno).
