Today the Asc2k site has recieved two Spam notices which appear to be
the Netsky worms. Of course, we don't accept attachments here, so the
worm wasn't able to sneak thru:) Most of you know how these worms are
propagated, but for those of you who don't, I want to explain that so
you can all take protective measures for your PC. First, an
individual will recieve a worm or virus as an attachment. It is
harmless unless you open the attachment, and then it goes to work in
your address book, mimicing all of your addresses and then sending
the worm or virus to all of your addresses. Nasty little things they
are:)I had someone send me a rather nasty email once, complete with
expletives, blaming me for the worm they got-but it wasn't me-it was
someone who had my address in their address book and they were
infected. For your own protection, please, please, get a good virus
program on your computer, and UPDATE it often-at least once every 10
days if not more (AND, turn the program on while you are on the
internet:). Also, don't open anything if you don't know the sender.
If you know the sender, and they don't say they have sent you an
attachment in their email, write them first and ask them. Let's all
have safe computering! Caring for all of you, Chris

Very good, Chris! As a computer support technician, those virus emails can be
one of the biggest headaches to deal with, so I'm always trying to pass along
info such as that. I just wanted to add in, if you do not currently have
anti-virus software (or the subscription has run out and you are no longer able
to download the updates for it), there is a free online scan which you can run
on your computer. You can get to it here -
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ . Scroll down a little, and there will
be a link on the left side of the page for Panda Active Scan. This will allow
you to scan your computer to verify there are no viruses running. If you have
dialup, you can still use the scan, and do not have to remain connected during
it, but you will have to reconnect to get the report when it completes.

For those who do not have a firewall (a device, hardware or software) which
watches communication entering and leaving the computer, blocking any
undesirable entries (and exits, such as from spyware/adware), there is a good
free one you can download called Zone Alarm. If you have broadband (high speed
internet, cable, DSL, T1, etc) it is very, very important to run a firewall.
Zone Alarm can be obtained at
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp. There
is a free version, and a pay version. Zone Alarm is the free one, Zone Alarm
Pro is the paid, and offers more features than basic Zone Alarm.

There are other programs which you can obtain which are important, but I did not
want to overload everyone with information which did not pertain to the subject
of the group. If you have questions or need advice about how to maintain your
computer so it works at its peak capacity, feel free to contact me and I'll be
glad to help.
