this certainly has caught the attention of many around the nation, especially those living on the northeast coast. as you will witness below, there are many theories as to just what happened. personally, i believe it was indeed a fireball or 'bolide'. some astronomers believe it may have been part of a meteor shower known as "kappa-cygnids". however it is a bit early for this known meteor shower.

one astronomer i interviewed suggested we witnessed something called "sporadic radiants". this term is used to identify two
very loose classifications for fast-moving, (non-shower) meteors which can be observed every night of the year.

there is also one other meteor shower known as "alpha-capricornids" which is expected to peak july 30th may have been related in the way of early meteors.

i have also been very much aware of what appears to be a sharp increase in volcanic activity along the 'ring of fire'. is there evidence of a solar-asteroid-volcono connection? as reported earlier this year, there are some in the science community who would say yes.

major bolide in northeast us
by tony cecce

i just got off the phone with a fellow local astronomer. he received a phone call a few minutes before that from another friend of ours who claimed he saw a major daytime bolide which was "as bright as the sun". this was then followed about five minutes later by a series of sharp booms. all three of us heard the booms, unfortunately i was in the house at the time. we are spread out over a 15 mile region between corning and elmira new york.

there are sporadic [rain] showers in this region so i assumed what i heard was thunder.

i don't have further information at this time of azimuth or direction of travel. i'm curious if this can be confirmed by anyone on the list or if someone knows of a site that might confirm this type of thing.

my mother was outside, she didn't see the meteor itself but did see the landscape briefly brighten then heard two sharp booms. the booms were quite unlike thunder, she thought there was a car accident.

another observer in corning saw it "hit a hill" in the southwest, assuming the boom was the sound of impact.

the tv just flashed across the bottom of the screen that law enforcement agencies have received meteor sightings from northeast new york deep into pennsylvania.

quite a few of the calls i have received were from people who were scared by the close call. i have assured them not to worry, you won't hear the one that gets you. ;-)

by steve thomas

on tv news this morning they're talking about a "meteor shower" last night in the eastern usa -- not saying when it happened.
as they're mentioning sonic booms, shall i assume they are garbled reports of the daylight fireball that andrãƒâƒã‚âƒãƒâ‚ã‚âƒãƒâƒã‚â‚ãƒâ‚ã‚âƒãƒâƒã‚âƒãƒâ‚ã‚ â‚ãƒâƒã‚â‚ãƒâ‚ã‚âƒãƒâƒã‚âƒãƒâ‚ã‚âƒãƒâƒã‚â‚ãƒâ‚ã‚â‚ ãƒâƒã‚âƒãƒâ‚ã‚â‚ãƒâƒã‚â‚ãƒâ‚ã‚â© knãƒâƒã‚âƒãƒâ‚ã‚âƒãƒâƒã‚â‚ãƒâ‚ã‚âƒãƒâƒã‚âƒãƒâ‚ã‚â‚ ãƒâƒã‚â‚ãƒâ‚ã‚âƒãƒâƒã‚âƒãƒâ‚ã‚âƒãƒâƒã‚â‚ãƒâ‚ã‚â‚ムâƒã‚âƒãƒâ‚ã‚â‚ãƒâƒã‚â‚ãƒâ‚ã‚â¶fel said
was being reported to the fireball data center?

yep, the initial wire service reports were botched with "meteor shower" crap about what was apparently a single bolide.

and, as usual, they all ran off to call their local universities' astronomy departments to call people who probably haven't spent more than 5 seconds of their professional careers thinking about meteors :-)

the supposed impact stuff smells to high heaven to me, too.

ladies & gents:

well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. one of the planetarium staff, here, was told that the little northern pennsylvania town of trout run was "destroyed" by the meteor. the witness was about 100 miles away when she heard the tale from her hairdresser. [sigh.]

daytime meteor scorches corn
by rich taibi

hi all,
this a.m. the tv news broadcast an interview with local folks from the salladasburg, pa area. the report mentioned scorched corn and so forth. my "fraud antenna" picked up the possibility of rural hucksters trying to bring tourists to out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere pennsylvania. i understand that real meteorites land with less than corn scorching temperatures (cool is what i actually heard). bob's report mentioned men "watching deer". perhaps these same guys torched the shrubbery?
developments will be fascinating to watch!
