i am not demanding anyone to answer, but simply putting up a
question, which may in return provoke thought.
it's currently 2003 a.d., right? didn't christ die in 33 a.d.?
wouldn't it be more correct to call this year right now 1981 a.d., or
something like that?

hi tony:
you would think a simple, logical question like this
would get a simple, logical answer. no such luck.
the short version: yes, you're correct that it would
be something like 1981, except for a couple of roman
emperors who mucked around with the calendar
subsequent to the year 1, and a couple of popes who
did the same thing much later. absolute dates for
christ's birth and death have never been established.
when ra talks about dates in the material on dw's
website, they're using the calendar that we currently
use, not absolute dates from a pivotal event. if ra
references any absolute at all, it would be the mayan
calendar, which doesn't use the birth/death of christ
at all. the mayan calendar is a solar cycle calendar,
based on advanced observations of the great solar
cycle. this cycle includes the precession of the
equinoxes in its calculations, as well as the movement
of the constellations across the plane of the
eclliptic.
most calendars are based on a solar cycle of some
kind; even the gregorian and julian calendars, which
were defined by popes, used the sun, moon and stars as
reference. easter, for example is always set
so-many-days after passover, and passover is predicted
on a lunar schedule {i think}.
clear as mud?
