Beloved Friends,
As you already know, I will be arriving in
Iraq on Friday, October 11 to focus a
worldwide prayer vigil to promote a peaceful
solution to the conflict with Iraq. The US
government believes that there is only one
way to establish peace and security in the
world. Together we are called to recognize
that there is a force more powerful than our
military weapons. It is the force of prayer,
and I believe that it is the most powerful
force in the universe.
On Monday I returned to my hotel room in San
Francisco and found a note that had been
placed under the door. I will not go into the
details of what was written, only that the
four words warned me not to travel to Iraq.
Though I don't know who delivered the note,
the intent was clear. It reminds me of when I
traveled to Baghdad in 1998 and the US State
Department called my sponsor in London asking
them to relay a message. They were asked to
remind me that traveling to Iraq was illegal,
and I would likely be arrested when I
returned to the US. I was not arrested, and I
will not be dissuaded by these new threats.
There is simply too much at risk if we
continue on this perilous path. I ask only
that you keep me in your prayers and
participate in this vigil.
I would also like to make it clear that I am
not in favor of the continued rule of Saddam
Hussein in Iraq. I agree that he is a
murderous dictator whose main goal is to
consolidate the power he stole from his own
people. However, I also believe that the
direction President Bush is leading us in is
wrong and counterproductive. Violence will
only lead to more violence, and that is why
we are calling on millions around the world
to claim the power of a focused, unified
prayer vigil to shift the current tide. We
have seen the results of this method many
times before, and it is critically important
that we build on our successes. Maybe then
our leaders will realize that we stand at the
cusp of a new world that operates under new
laws. Those laws are compassion and love, and
we affirm them NOW!
Please join us in this important effort. Pass
this notice to as many people as you can so
we will have the support of millions of
people committed to peaceful action. Once
