i just wanted to chime in and say that i think the new tool cd, lateralus,
is brilliant. the whole thing seems to be a concept album about ascension,
i'll try to track down all the lyrics online and post them. and
jeremy, this new album is not as abrasive, imho, as their other albums.
they've matured spiritually and musically. the new album reminds me
alot of rush....it's amazing. there's even a sample from an art bell
show caller towards the end, and art bell is thanked on the back of the
cd. i'm amazed that one of the biggest, if not the biggest, pop album
right now is not just musically brilliant, but talks about all of this
ascension concept quite literally. this isnt a case of inferring something
from the lyrics. it's blatant.
it also has the coolest cover art i've ever seen, with a clear plastic
insert with all kinds of symbolic images, including much sacred geometry
and chakra symbols (trumpet shaped cones with spirals moving up them,
emanating from the heart, etc)
everyone should at least check out the cover art, but you have to open
up the cd to see it. it has a black slide on plastic cover over the
whole thing.
tool will be playing 7 us dates in august with prog-rock veterans king
crimson opening. should be a show to tell our grandkids about...

definitely progressive. i'm not sure, but i think it's been at least 3
or 4 years since tool's last album was recorded. they've definitely
improved and have created some challenging, creative music on this new
album. i've never been much of a tool fan (but i never disliked them),
but i just felt i had to buy this album after the guy beside me here
at work bought it the day it came out (a week and a half ago). he showed
me the artwork from inside it, and just that convinced mei *had* to go
get this.
very emotional, symbolic, impressive music. when i have more time
i'm going to really sit down and analyze the music. i have a suspicion
that the actual rhythms/time signatures and chord progressions have
a suboncious symbolism to them. lots of 5/8 and 7/8 time signatures,
and somehow they blend patterns of 5/8 and 7/8 sequentially to make
a spiralling type overall sound...
david, you need to hear this album...

i recommend the schism video also if u have the time to download ~75mb, u
can find a link to it from toolshed.down.net . aenema had quite a few
ascension themes in it too, like in the songs 46 & 2, and aenema. i think
maynard used alot of the same vocal approach for lateralus as he did for a
perfect circle, what do u think brian? jeremy, as far as i see it the soul
of tool is in its lyrics and always has been, u can't really judge it just
by its abrasive sound. sure, i guess david is right tool did used to sound
rather angry in its beginning, but as i see it anger can be a catalyst for
change, some have used it to break out of constrictive thought control
systems and begin our first steps to open mindedness, i know i did.

> absolutely agree with you... although if you look at music from a vibrational point of view, there are vibrations that tend to highten rather than lower vibration, but there's a time for everything, and i can completely understand that some people may need an opportunity to integrate that in.
> if the soul of tool is in it's lyrics, then they really must have changed. that first claymation video they came out with way back in the mid nineties was pretty gruesome. i completely support an artist in his quest for self- and collective-understanding through artistic expression, but i thought that video, and a lot of their music, was kind of sick, and certainly wasn't where i was at the time (i thought the song was kinda catchy, though).
> anyway, it's not a criticism of tool, but i remember when talking with david during my intake interview, he specifically brought up the tool example he shared with the list, so i always thought it funny that people on the list kept bringing it up. i'll be interested to hear if your opinion changes, david. ;-)

i recommend the schism video also if u have the time to download ~75mb, u
can find a link to it from toolshed.down.net . aenema had quite a few
ascension themes in it too, like in the songs 46 & 2, and aenema. i think
maynard used alot of the same vocal approach for lateralus as he did for a
perfect circle, what do u think brian? jeremy, as far as i see it the soul
of tool is in its lyrics and always has been, u can't really judge it just
by its abrasive sound. sure, i guess david is right tool did used to sound
rather angry in its beginning, but as i see it anger can be a catalyst for
change, some have used it to break out of constrictive thought control
systems and begin our first steps to open mindedness, i know i did.
