>my thought has always been that the hilo side of hawaii (i believe the south eastern side) will slip into the ocean in what's known as a "long run-out" landslide. this will cause tidal waves 400 feet high on the west coast of the u.s. and elsewhere.
>
>this is not sheer fantasy. i saw a special on the "discovery channel" about long run out land slides. regular land slides runout about twice the distance they fall. a long run out landslide runs out 20 times the distance in falls. scientists have a number of theories why this is but don't agree why.

>scientists traced ancient tidal ways over 400 feet high that occurred in australia to this type of landslide in hawaii. a deep sea research project of the hawaiian islands mapped out the paths of these landslides and hilo on the big island is next. no one is sure just when this event will happen.
