a wonderful thing happened, i came in contact with a "soccer ball"
tree ornament. so what's so great about this? almost simultaneously
my dogs bumbled in and that combination got my wheels turning.
soccer balls have 20 hexagons(6 sided shapes) and 12 pentagons
(5 sided shapes.) there has been this age old question what is
better, 6 pointed stars or 5 pointed? my answer: soccer ball.
this beautiful sphere is made from a combination of shapes,
within which you can inscribe both 6 pointed stars (in hexagons)
and 5 pointed stars (in pentagons.) this is symbolic of synergy
and this ornament is quickly becoming my favorite.
the 20 hexagons are interesting: these could be broken up into
5 sets of 4, where the individual sets of 4 correspond to
"tetrahedron points". that is, the centers of the hexagons, within
a set, become the tip locations of a corresponding tetrahedron
inscribed within the sphere. in this case, these 5 tetrahedrons
when viewed together are best described by the "time star earth"
figure which is a most remarkable figure of 5 interlaced tetrahedrons.
the 12 pentagons are curious - if you remove the hexagons then you
could form them together into a dodecahedron.
i thought mawk may be interested in all this and felt compelled
to bounce this around.
