2012 & the kali yuga

one of the most interesting calendar coincidences in relation to the mayan 2012 information, is the similarity between the start dates of the last long count cycle of the mayan system and the hindu’s kali yuga. yuga’s are vast periods of time, epoch’s that relate to the earths journey around a cosmological central sun. the four yuga (satya yuga, treta yuga, dvapara yuga and kali yuga) together make up an entire world age between creation and destruction events, held to be around 4,320,000 years in total duration.

most 21-12-2012 researchers are aware of the 3114bce start date of the current long count cycle, less people are aware however that the kali yuga, a predicted era of moral decent and spiritual bleakness, began in the year 3102bce. a startling similarity, a mere 12 years difference for systems on different sides of the planet. the brahmavaivarta purana sutra from ancient india depicts a period which has many of the failings visible in our modern society, such is the backdrop of the spiritual decline in the kali yuga.

it is however a mistake for people to seek a link between the mayan 2012 end-date and the closing of the kali yuga. though their starts may have links the ends do not. the kali yuga is set to continue on for a vast period of time, at least 432,000 years, well eclipsing the 5126 years of the mayan long count. scholars from philosophies such as buddhism, and from religions such as brahmanist hinduism, often discuss ages as being many millions of years long, entire vast culpa of time are addressed.

there is an excellent buddhist parable that depicts visually an era of time described as an eon, far more effective than a string of numbers. a teacher monk explains that an eon can be likened to the great stone mountain meru. once every year a man passes the mountain and lightly brushed against it a strip of the finest silk. the mountain will be completely worn away by his action well before the eon closes.

...for being so kind as to present my articles here in this place of spiritual sharing. also for being so kind as to leave the information open to investigation as is, rather than summarized and filtered.

i hope that i have the pleasure of some more in depth communication with you and others here in the near future. i have added a link to the site to here and hope that the link can also be on higher levels that simple html code :)

hi lighteye,

thanks for bringing this to light.

this post is to correct a information given in your post. according to the hindu timelines, our universe is as long in it's existance as life of the brahma that created it, who is 'our' brahma in the case of 'our' universe. there are 100s of 1000s of universes and correspondingly brahma. now the life expectancy of our brahma is a 100 brahma years of years in the brahmaloka or the satya loka which is the highest of the seven heavens in this comos comprising of seven heaven worlds (the sun with the nine planets being the second from bottom among them) and the seven hell worlds.

now to shed some light on the extent/duration of one brahma year - 12 brahma hours or the brahma's day is equivalent to 1000 maha yugas. a maha yuga is an entire cycle comprising of the four individual yugas as you stated, the shortest among them being the kali yuga which is itself 432,000 years long. the dwapara yuga is twice that long or 864,000 years. the treta yuga preceding the dwapara is thrice as long as the kali and the satya yuga preceding that is 4 times as long. so adding all of it comes to 4,320,000 years for one mahayuga (10 times the figure u gave). the hindu scriptures predict the coming of the kalki incarnation of the supreme lord bringing an end to the presently ongoing kali yuga (the yuga of spiritual darkness) and bring about the beginning of the satya yuga (the other extreme of kali among the four yugas) period of the next mahayuga. the term yuga literally means " a very long time period".

now, to bring to light a possible fallacy with the accepted date for the beginning of the present kali yuga. if we accept the given date it would mean the dwapara yuga preceding it was enacted on this perticular earth planet, since homo sapiens were existant here from long before 3012 b.c. . which means, the homo sapiens should have been around for at least 864,000 years preceding 3012 b.c. this is quite an impossibility since fossil records on this planet of the homo genus speaks otherwise.

in fact, what i just noticed the other day is this: i have been long suspecting the end of the current kali yuga is not more than a few thosand years from now if not a few years. i think this way seeing the state of the world at the moment. so the other day, i checked up the 'human evolution' page on wikipedia and found an interesting fact. according to the homo sapien section of the article the cranial changes and development in tool usage in the species the homo erectus started roughly 400,000 years before today. i don't know the error range of this estimation but holding that to +/- a few thousand years this figure comes amazingly close to the hindu number 432,000 years given the the kali yuga (exactly 12,000 years in the heaven just above ours where one day is a year on earth). so we have two possible evidences at hand.

1) the state of affairs on the earth which is pretty close the state of affairs predicted for the last or near to last phase of the kali yuga by the hindu scriptures.
2) the period of the existance of the first glimpses of homo sapiens on planet earth being amazingly close to the duration of the kali yuga as per the scriptures.

putting these two together ( and they do fit in pretty well) does it not seem to point to the fact that kali yuga is coming to and end and the hindu stuff might well have a bearing with 2012a.d, the mayan end date, than with 3012 b.c. the supposed ( and a possibly erroneous) beginning date ascribed to it.

my theory is that the preceding dwapara yuga of the present mahayuga (btw, 'maha' means 'great') have happenned with humans on another earth like planet somewhere and the kali was ticked off on this one by those very people.

i am inviting open minded and logically sound responses to this from everyone interested in it here.

all glory to the lord!

another thing to consider regarding the kali yuga is that the 432,000 year timeline for kali yuga is likely based on an error in calculation by the hindus. i'm going to refer you to the website http://cycle-of-time.net/kaliyuga.htm which explains it, however the point given here is that the kali yuga was originally projected to be 1,200 years long, but this was misinterpreted to mean 1,200 divine years, equivalent to 432,000 standard years. there was no justification for this calculation but they took it anyway.

so basically this means, don't believe everything you read.

i know that many scholars (several ones among them of hindu origins) are of the opinion that the said 12,000 years, which is the length of a mahayuga, are actually earth years. i have also heard of the descending and ascending cycle model before. a semi-famous indian master, sri yukteshwara giri (whose disciple, sri paramhansa yogananda became famous in the west through his efforts in spreading spiritual knowledge in the west and his book, " the autobiography of a yogi") was i believe the first to propose this 12,000 year ascending/descending model.

some immidiate objection/hitches come up with them:

1. the descending/acending cycles:

these kind of descending and ascending cycles can result only when some object makes periodic movements of some sort, like the earth revolving around the sun, an oscillating pendulum and so on. now, the cycles of the four yugas are spiritual matter and not the result of any tangible material movement. note that i have made two points here:

i) these are spiritual cycles consisting of phases.
ii) they do not involve any corresponding material movement.

it is said that the color in which god himself appears to his devotees in the different yugas are different. right now, i.e. in the kali yuga, his color is black. so one can make a tour of all the krishna temples in india and see for oneself that all the worshipped idols are black in color.

that was just to stress on the spiritual nature of this cycles called mahayugas. the real point is if it is a cycle and not a periodic material movement it will by all means be devoid of any ascending and descending phases like a sine/cosine wave, and will look much more like the traditional four-repeating-yugas-(in the same order) model.

in short the ascending / descending cycle model is counter to any reasoning and to traditional beliefs. and if there is one thing about hinduism i've observed in my own life as a devout hindu, with a scientific and open mind, is the strict presense of logical reasons behind every single thing that hinduism states. in that way, it seems to be the most "scientific" belief system of all to me.

2) the short 1,200 years for the kali yuga goes against history.

even if one considers 2400 total years including the two cycles, according the chart in the link given by mikazo the kali yuga started on 500 b.c and is well over by now. now there is historical record of gautam buddha who was on this planet aroud 600 b.c ( i'm no history expert, but can tell this much that there is a chapter in every officially recommended history books used in modern day india about gautama buddha's life and work), but strangely there is none for krishna who'se death is marks the exact beginning of the present kali yuga, or any of his contemporaries. in fact the story of krishna and his contemporaries, the world famous indian epic called the mahabharata has been written so long before 500 b.c. in it's full and very very complete detail that historians cannot pin a historical date on it's origins with 100% surity. no one knows for sure how long ago the author veda vyasa himself lived, let alone the timing of the story he related. now it should be very strange that facts and figures exist in full detail for something older and not for something more recent.

or maybe the poeople who believe the kali yuga to be a triffle 1,200 years long does not belive in any of the krishna stories.

it is said that in those days (the days of the mahabharata) the average lifetime of a human was 1000s of years. surely it wasnt anywhere in the recent history of mankind, may not be even in the ones (hitories) enacted in this perticular planet.

i'm sure if one applies his/her mind and knowledge to it for a while, one can come up with several other objections to this scheme.

personally, i don't "believe" in the fact that the 12,000 years are divine years (in strict technical accuracy, they are years in the swarga loka, the third from the bottom hindu heaven world ours being the second) but i "know" it to be a fact, just like one does not believe it is daytime when the sun is up there in the sky but "knows" it. i know it because the facts and figures fit things i "know" to be true from personal experiences which i may not necessarily like to share with strangers. but that's my knowledge and me.

what matters is lots of details would stand against the 12,000 years to be earth yearsm besides the fact that it looks like a absolutely ridiculous time scale for a whole mahayuga.

let there be reason :-d

those are some good points. i certainly know very little about all of this. :) but i do see the 432,000 year kali yuga cycle idea get thrown around a lot, with all kinds of side messages such as, "we're in for an awfully long time of this and this," and it just doesn't seem quite accurate to me. it gives me this mental image of the next 400,000 years of earth evolution looking like something out of a tim burton movie. :) so i do think in whatever way is necessary it is good that this figure is challenged.
